Wow I have this same thought so often: "In Belcaro, there were considerably more trees than on our street, which offered the coolness of shade and the luxury of privacy." Im not really into big house and fancy cars, but I dream about living in more natural and scenic locations. Great writing!
Glad you can relate! Growing up in a rural place, I never knew how good I had it until moving to the city. Now I miss the trees, the mountains, the streams.
Beautiful, beautiful! And heartbreakingly true. Still, my parents managed to push their 4 children ahead farther than they ever went...by eating beans so that their kids could go to college. Another thing that helped was the genetic pool that produced four extraordinary children who won multiple scholarships and were able to earn good wages (and yes! have a house!) as they grew older. Sometimes the American Dream comes to pass. The genetic thing was just plain old luck.
So much of who gets to have a good life, and who doesn’t, is luck! And by “good” I mean not suffering from poverty specifically. Thank you for reading🩷
This resonated with me deeply. My parents were fond of using the "someday" promise. "Someday we will go camping." "Someday we will take a trip to __" After you go to college and get a job. Someday you can travel to Europe..." Etc. I feel fortunate to not have fallen into that trap when I was younger, but for some reason I have been doing the "someday" thing myself lately. I have to retrain myself to live in the moment, not for "someday". Thank you for the reminder.

Thank you for reading Doreen and I'm glad it resonated, I always have to remind myself of this too, which is why I wrote this!
